Sensual Dance as Fitness? Yep.
“What she does isn’t fitness.”
“What she does isn’t fitness.” Those words came out of a well-known personal trainer’s mouth. Yes, this trainer is male. No, this wasn’t a long time ago. This happened in 2018.
Over my 9+ years teaching pole and sensual dance, I’ve grown accustomed to hearing the skepticism in the voices of those that haven’t taken a sensual or pole dance class.
For those that have never experienced a sensual or pole dance class, it’s easy to misunderstand what they see. What looks like a bunch of women (and men) running around in their skivvies is really women (and men) celebrating their bodies and all the amazing things they can do.
If you’re not aware of the benefits of dance (forget it being sensual or pole), here are just a few in no particular order:
- Strengthen the mind-body connection
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Gain strength and flexibility
- Burn calories and increase endurance
- Increase endorphins
- Reduce joint and muscle pain
- Fight depression
- Improve short-term memory
- Boost immune system
- Make friends and connections with like-minded souls
- Lower blood pressure
- Improve sleep
- Increase sex drive
- Reduce menopause symptoms
- Excellent low impact exercise for expecting mothers
- Have fun
What that trainer was correct about is that what I do is not “traditional” fitness. You’ll experience a class with elements of yoga, pilates, dance…and yep, traditional fitness.
More importantly, in a class with me, you’ll experience an encouraging environment and a positive space. Your reason for attending class will be honored – whatever it it might be.
